The biennial history of Byzantium is essentially a history of the Eastern Roman Empire. To distinguish the ancient history of ancient Rome from the medieval, scientists conditionally took the term “History of Byzantium”. The name comes from the ancient name of the city of Byzantium (Byzantium), whose place Constantine I the Great elevated the new-medieval capital of the Roman Empire and thus gave a new course of events. It is precisely the period of his reign being taken as a threshold between ancient and medieval history. When we say “Byzantines” we mean to all the people who lived within the Eastern Roman Empire without emphasizing their ethnic origin, because they themselves were treated as subjects of the Roman Empire and served it.
